For the past few years, Google has been increasing the influence of mobile-friendliness when determining which websites will appear in mobile search results. In early 2015 Google made an unexpected announcement sending the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) world into a frenzy that eventually earned the title, “Mobilegeddon”. The announcement read as follows:
“Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. The change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact on our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high-quality search results that are optimized for their devices”.
The message was alarming to the SEO industry as Google rarely (if ever) makes announcements regarding algorithm changes. However, the scary big red flag was the ambiguous wording in the post (“significant impact”). What did that mean? Why this change? Most importantly, how does this affect your business?
Recent studies have proven most people are likely to search the web for information and products using their mobile device. In fact, by the year 2021 mobile retail sales are to account for more than 50% of total eCommerce sales.
As a business executive, this conversion relates to increased traffic in numerous beneficial ways. Not only will your site be more user-friendly and easier navigate, but your business will also be perceived by users as modern and relevant. Additional perks that resulted from this mandate included blazing fast speed, increased traffic, easier conversions, engagement metrics (ability to include hyperlinks to relevant topics) and better SEO results are guaranteed. Not to mention mobile-friendly websites look equally attractive on all devices.
For all the mentioned reasons the conversion is better for your business. But what if you are happy with your current traffic and things seem to be going well without making the change? Well, that momentum probably won’t last much longer. In October 2018 Google made a follow-up announcement stating that if the conversion hasn’t been made businesses will be penalized. This meaning if the conversion hasn’t been made then your site won’t come up in search results at all! Obviously, it is pretty difficult to market your business if your customers can’t find your site or shop with you on the internet.
One of the most important aspects of having a successful business is staying present and relevant to your customers. A mobile-friendly site that is enjoyable and easy to use is the best way to attract new customers and expect repeat business.
